"Your Affectionate Daughter, Isabella" by Ann Williams

This book tells the story of Isabella Malvina Torrance Smith Reid, and her family preserved through letters and records over generations and stored in the attic of the home, Cedar Grove. Cedar Grove was the centerpiece of a cotton plantation in the northwestern corner of Mecklenburg County, NC.

The story is factual and is written from the points of view of those who lived it and told in the language they spoke. Ann Williams has been a volunteer for Historic Rosedale since 1983. She has succeeded beautifully in bringing back to life the history preserved in the boxes found in the attic of Cedar Grove. Paperback.

Price: $18.00 (including tax) + $3.00 shipping and handling.

Explorer Friend Packets

Your child can take home a part of their visit to Rosedale. A portrait of one of the children of 1840’s Rosedale, introduced to them during the tour, may be purchased to accompany your family home. Your child can choose between Willy, an 11-year-old son; Sarah Jane, the 8-year-old daughter or Rena, a 10 year old slave child of the plantation. Your child will be asked to take this Explorer Friend on an adventure of exploration into their modern day community. Each child’s portrait and packet of information and activities is $5.00. After visiting with your child for a while, he/she will be asked to help their friend write a letter about their adventure discovering things, ideas and customs that have changed since 1840. We hope your child will extend their learning experience by viewing their life in the 21st century through the eyes of their 19th century Explorer Friend. Introduce your children to the Explorer Friends of Rosedale. They may decide which friend they would like to have come visit their home.

Explorer Willy

My name is William Davidson Caldwell, but you can call me Willy. I am eleven years old. My father, Dr. Caldwell owns this plantation outside the village of Charlotte. I’m glad that you came to visit me today and learn about my life in 1840. I know that you saw many things that were different and fun.

Now, I want to go on an adventure and explore new places and things, just like Lewis and Clark! Will you take me with you today and help me explore your life? I’m sure your life is very different from mine. What things will you show me? Where will we go? I am so excited! What a great adventure I will have!

After a while I will have to return home. But at the end of our adventure, you can help me write a letter to Miss Frew telling her about all the wonders I saw and the discoveries I made. Then you can mail my letter and me back to Miss Frew. Maybe Miss Frew will read my letter to the whole class! What a great explorer I will be!
